Dr. Brown has been a staunch educator within urban communities for the last twenty-eight years. She passionately served the Newark Public Schools for twenty-one years as a teacher, department chairperson, vice principal and the last eight years as principal of an urban high school. During these years, she was able to actualize her dream of encouraging youth, developing teacher leaders and building leadership capacity in administrators.
It has been Dr. Brown’s life’s work to empower the marginalized, to be a champion for equity and to serve underserved communities well. She proudly says during her tenure, those three objectives were accomplished.
She received a B.S. in Education & English and a M.A. in Educational Leadership, Management & Policy from Seton Hall University. In May of 2018, she earned her doctorate at Seton Hall University as well. Her research focused on equity and racism in education and Black mothers’ parental involvement strategies and agency in 21st century schools. Currently, I also am the CEO and founder of Indigo & Brown’s Consultant Services LLC, which supports educational institutions address issues of equity, helps institutions create safe spaces for families of color and sharpens teacher implementation of effective pedagogy. She asserts that career has challenged traditionally gendered ‘masculine spaces’ and made room for women in leadership. However, her big and bodacious vision is to make American educational institutions vestiges of Anti- Blackness & racism into spaces of excellence that promote the “equity of love” for families of color.
