Newark, NJ – August 1, 2024 – Mayor Ras J. Baraka announced today that the City of Newark will unveil a new public mural “Collecting Dreams,” by Ghanaian artist Mohammed “Moh” Awudu, tomorrow, Friday, August 2, at noon, at the Boylan Street Recreation Center outdoor pool area. The center is located at 916 South Orange Avenue in the city’s West Ward.

First Lady Linda Baraka and West Ward Council Member Dupré L. Kelly will deliver remarks at the unveiling.

“The inspirational energy of this mural will be absorbed into the spirit of Newark’s children and families for generations to come,” said Mayor Baraka. “As our streetscapes cascade citywide with art, our community is elevated and our shared psyche is cemented in the radiance of our successes and our aspirations for our future.”

This expansive mural surrounds the center’s pool, capturing the essence of community and youth, and encouraging joy and play. A panorama-like facade depicts young kids swimming among colorful fish, coral, and flowers rendered in vibrant colors. The children glisten with ambition, wearing expressions of determination, and are adorned with symbols of success.

“Moh Awudu’s mural ‘Collecting Dreams’ captures the freshness of childhood, and our freedom to chase our dreams and grasp our future,” said Mrs. Baraka. “These are the images I want my own young children to be surrounded by as they learn through experience that nothing is out of their reach or beyond their potential.”

“‘Collecting Dreams,’ the vibrant mural by Ghanaian artist Mohammed ‘Moh’ Adwudu, serves as a captivating centerpiece at the Boylan Street Pool here in the West Ward, inviting all who enter this space to engage with their inner visions,” said Council Member Kelly. “Through its depiction of water, the mural symbolizes the deep currents of emotion and intuition that flow within us all. Water, a powerful emblem of creativity, fertility, renewal, and purity, mirrors the journey of every dreamer, reminding them to collect the treasures hidden in their aspirations. Visitors who gaze upon this inspiring artwork are encouraged to dive into their dreams, fostering positivity and renewal in a serene atmosphere. Let ‘Collecting Dreams’ be a beacon for all, illuminating the path to emotional exploration and creative expression.”

Inspired by a community pool’s lively atmosphere and sounds, the artist reflects on the importance of self-discipline and adaptability. Learning to swim symbolizes life’s journey, requiring resilience and endurance. Mr. Awudu’s mural envisions the young swimmers who see this mural daily being empowered to master their skills.

“During my time at the center, I witnessed many young people learning to swim. Through this work, I aim to inspire them and believe that one day, when they master their skills, they can reach their highest potential and their dreams,” said Mr. Awudu.

During the summer months, nearly 200 residents swim at the pool daily. The center also serves as a location for summer camps and hosts a children’s playground and a basketball court.

“The Department of Recreation, Cultural Affairs & Senior Services is strongly committed to enhancing the quality of lives for all residents, and this mural project is just one of many to be introduced throughout the city to support vibrancy, and boost the ambiance of our community swimmers’ experience,” said Department of Recreation, Cultural Affairs & Senior Services Director Donnell M. Redding. “We look forward to more public art at our recreation facilities as a means to amplify our deep sense of community as Newarkers.”

This mural joins a number of other large-scale, ambitious public art projects unveiled this year by the City of Newark’s Division of Arts and Cultural Affairs including the extensive restoration of one of the country’s largest murals, Gateways to Newark: Portraits located on McCarter Highway.

“Newark is a hotbed of artistic talent and expression, and the proliferation of murals initiates and deepens a silent dialog with residents and visitors,” said Newark’s Arts & Cultural Affairs Director fayemi shakur. “The message reverberating throughout our wards is one of belonging and pride.”

The collaborative mission to revitalize the center’s outdoor space was made possible by the City of Newark Division of Arts and Cultural Affairs, Invest Newark, and Commercial District Services.

Mohammed “Moh” Awudu is a visual contemporary artist born and raised in Nima, a suburb of Accra, Ghana. His artistic approach emphasizes the sensual nature of art, utilizing murals, graffiti, and traditional paintings to inspire positive behaviors. Awudu work frequently addresses significant social issues, aiming to provide hope and awareness to those affected by these challenges.

With participation in more than 100 successful exhibitions and festivals worldwide, Mr. Awudu has established a significant presence in the global art scene. His contributions have been recognized with several prestigious awards, including the 2014 Sabolai Radio Art Competition, the 2016 Creative Arts Personality Award at the Nima Excellence Awards, and the 2019 GUBA Awards USA.

Beyond his artistic achievements, Mr. Awudu is deeply committed to giving back to his community. He dedicates his time to teaching and mentoring children from deprived communities in Ghana, using art as a tool for education and empowerment.
