Mayor Ras J. Baraka, the Newark Municipal Council, and Deputy Mayor of Community Engagement Jacqueline Quiles announced today that residents can start filling out their Census 2020 forms on-line at: www.2020census.gov. They can respond easily, whether online, over the phone or by U.S. mail—all without having to meet a census taker.
The United States Constitution mandates that the exact population of the nation be counted every 10 years for apportioning Congressional districts and other purposes, including allocation of federal aid based on population. The Department of Commerce is tasked with this endeavor.
In addition, the City’s Office of Community Engagement, is open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., to assist any resident with information about the Census. The office is located in Room 221, City Hall, 920 Broad Street.
With regard to Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19), Census 2020 is moving ahead according to plan. In a statement released this week, the U.S. Census Bureau said they are carefully monitoring the coronavirus (COVID-19) situation and will follow the guidance of federal, state, and local authorities.
Residents with more than 10 people in their household are urged to answer the Census online. Print guides for the Census are available in 59 languages at: https://www.census.gov/programs-surveys/decennial-census/2020-census/planning-management/language-resources/language-guides.html
